20. How do I Recover a Dead BlackBerry ?
When your device fails to start, it show one of these symptoms

A. Totally dead
Physical damage, water is the worst enemy of delicate electronic device. Try to hardware.

B. Trying to restart, LED activity only.
Your device is not able to start, something has gone wrong and the OS is corrupt.

C. Failed to start, a white screen with an error message.
Geeks call this an "Uncaught exception error". That is a polite way of saying, the last thread has terminated, the OS has halted because it is corrupt.

In many cases, the Application Loader can be used from Desktop Manager or Windows, If that fails to connect, there is one final solution. A. In order to restore the device, you need to have BlackBerry Desktop Manager installed. The original, as supplied on the BlackBerry CD is adaquite.
Tip: If you choose to download the newest v4xx, you can save a lot of time by choosing custom install and disabling Roxio Media Manager. At start-up, it really slows things down until it has built up it index of media.

B. After it is installed, you need to install a BlackBerry OS file that is specific to your device. The original version, as supplied by the carrier, is the safe choice, but you can use any model specific version. This is not supplied on your BlackBerry CD.

C. Once the OS has been installed, you have to prepare it for the device.
Delete the vendor.xml file located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader

D. You are now ready to restore your device. Verify that BlackBerry Desktop Manager is NOT running. Plug the device directly into the computer's USB port.
Windows XP: Start / Run... / Command Windows Vista: Start / Command (type this into 'start search') You will see a black window similar to this. I have used UPPERCASE to highlight the typed commands. Windows Vista
CD \
Windows XP
CD \
When you hit enter at the last command a forced rebuild will start. E. When it has finished, unplug it from the USB port and wait for it to finish start-up. Thirty minutes is typical, do not interrupt it. Once it has recovered, you can use Desktop Manager's Application Loader to customize it and restore from your backup files, if you have saved them previously

21. How To: ReInstall OS When Computer Won't Recognize The Device Is Connected ??
When trying to re-install an operating system that constantly intializes, Desktop Manager will not recognize the device.

solution :
1. Install the desktop software.
2. Install the handheld software. (If it is a non Vendor software.. exp. T-Mobile. search and delete the "vendor.xml" file.)
3. Pull the battery out of your device.
4. With the battery out connect the device to the computer.
5. Go to Options and select "connection settings"
6. Select USB PIN this may take a few moments since there is no battery in the device. you might even have to select detect device in some rare cases.
7. Select the application loader icon.
8. Select all software you want installed.
9. Proceed to the end portion untill you see the "Finish" button.
10. Very IMPORTANT. do not hit the finish button, instead select the ADVANCED button.
11. Make sure both boxes are checked.
12. Proceed until it ask you if you want to automatically back up and restore. Select DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY BACK UP MY HANDHELD.
13. Once the process starts. take care not to bump out the cord and re-insert the battery. Again on some rare occasions you might have to wait until it finishes saying connect to insert the battery.

If you do not get it by the 3rd time.. download the Blackberry java developers kit and install it. once installed find the javaloader.exe file and move it into the c:\ directory

Once it is under the c:\, go to start then run and type. cmd.exe

After the command prompt apears type in "c:\javaloader -usb wipe" to wipe the handheld

*The reason I have highlighted Step 13 is that this is very important to do BEFORE the DM tries to re-start your device because it WILL NOT re-intialize your device IF THE BATTERY IS NOT IN YOUR DEVICE.

# NOT send or receive any information over the internet, in any way shape or form, despite what you heard about it being possible

With a generic data plan in addition you may:
# use a third party browser like Opera Mini, but NOT the resident BlackBerry browser
# may get email either via a web interface (using Opera) or other third party app, but NOT BlackBerry push email
# use a number of third party applications that require net access, including some instant messenger programs, as long as they're available to install from DM because:
# canNOT install apps OTA because that requires the resident browser
# canNOT use BlackBerry messenger or do PIN-->PIN messaging

With a BlackBerry data plan you may do all of the above plus:

34part2 Why won't my OS update? I deleted the vendor.xml file!

So, you downloaded the newest, latest and greatest OS for your BlackBerry and have followed the below instructions:

1. Download and install Desktop Manager.
2. Download and install the OS of your choice for your device.
3. Delete vendor.xml located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader.
4. Plug in BB and open Desktop Manager.

However, when you open Desktop Manager you get no prompt to update. When you open Application Loader your new OS is not listed!! And this has been plaguing people for months now!!!

The problem lies in the new Desktop Manager's automatic "Check for Updates" feature. This feature uses your internet connection to look for OS updates for your device from your carrier. When it does this it loads a second virtual vendor.xml file in the temp folder on your computer. So, even after you delete the normal one that is installed with the OS and Desktop Manager, the automatic "Check for Updates" feature loads another one based on the brand of device you've got plugged into the PC.

To prevent this from happening you need to install Desktop Manager WITHOUT this Automatic Update service. Below are the steps to remove this service.

1. Go to Control Panel >Add/Remove Programs.
2. Click on "BlackBerry Desktop Software" and select "Change/Remove."
3. When prompted, hit "Next" and then you should get options for Modify, Repair, or Remove. Choose "Modify."
4. In the list of installed items, you should see "BlackBerry Automatic Update." Click the icon next to it and change it to "This feature will not be available." That should put an "X" next to "BlackBerry Automatic Update." If you don't see this option in this list then continue with the install and the installation will ask you a few screens later.

A screen will be shown where you will be asked to check the boxes for:

A) "Start BlackBerry Desktop Manager automatically each time the computer starts."
B) "Create a shortcut for BlackBerry Desktop Manager on the Windows Desktop."
C) "Check for software updates."

Be sure number 3, "Check for software updates," is NOT checked.
Note: If you're installing Desktop Manager fresh, be sure and choose the "Custom"

install button so that you get the prompt for what features you want installed. Otherwise all the features will be installed as normal and you'll have this issue.)

Once that is complete, you'll need to go back and search your computer for vendor.xml. When you do the search, make sure you click on "Advanced Options" and make sure that you search Hidden files and folders. This is important as some operating systems create a virtual store in the temp folder that this vendor.xml file is located in. You will not find this particular vendor.xml if you don't have hidden files/folders selected for search. Once the hidden vendor.xml is deleted it won't come back if you've reinstalled Desktop Manager without the Automatic Update Feature enabled.

Now, make sure your OS is installed (you may need to install the OS again, if you actually remove Desktop Manager and then reinstall Desktop Manager again. Make sure that you delete the normal vendor.xml file LAST before updating the device.
Tip of the day: Desktop Manager is not even required for doing an OS upgrade. In the same folder as the vendor.xml file is a file called Loader.exe. Running that will run apploader without Desktop Manager. It still makes the full backup and restore, but without all the DM stuff running in the background.
